Synergy Percussion: Xenakis vs Pateras

Synergy Percussion presents two ambitious works of an epic scale over two consecutive nights. Celebrating their 40th birthday this year, Synergy Percussion, Australia’s oldest and foremost contemporary music ensemble, is a world of sound with percussion at its heart. Over four decades of huge cultural change, the group has remained at the forefront of contemporary music, fiercely committed to defying expectations of what percussion music might aptly express.

On April 22 the ensemble will take on Xenakis’ Pleiades. Since its conception in 1978, this work has remained unchallenged as the most ambitious work  ever written for percussion ensemble. A sound-world unlike anything before, it is an intricate pattern of the rhythms and sounds, with the musicians moving in synchrony as they play their instruments.

On the following evening April 23, Synergy Percussion presents the world premiere of Anthony Pateras’ Beauty will be amnesiac or will not be at all’. Anthony is among the most in-demand Australian composers of his generation. He has written works for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Inspired by Xenakis’ Pleiades, Pateras’ work is considered to be the most ambitious Australian concert percussion work. Members of Synergy Percussion will be dispersed throughout the concert space on platforms, amidst six speakers angled in different directions. The audience will be free to roam below the performance area, ensuring a different acoustic perspective on the piece at any given listening point. Anthony writes, “In this sense, the real experience of listening (i.e. everyone hears differently) shall be encouraged.”
