Baroque Violinist Has More Than One String To His Bow

It might seem like the obvious pun, but Russian Baroque violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky has more than one string to his bow.

As well as directing and performing as solo violinist with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in concerts in Sydney in July/August, Sinkovsky will also sing with the orchestra as counter-tenor soloist, performing the music of Vivaldi.

“Everyone loves Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, but they are really just the tip of the iceberg of the brilliant violin concertos that he wrote,” says Paul Dyer, AO, Artistic Director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.  “Dmitry will bring some of Vivaldi’s equally dazzling but less famous works to the stage with the Brandenburg. This is difficult and virtuosic music that is extremely entertaining and we’ll be in for a great show in the hands of Dmitry Sinkovsky.”

Dmitry Sinkovskywas a star student of the iconic Moscow Conservatory. He prepared for an international career on modern violin but changed focus in 2005 and pursued specialised early music training in Moscow, Montreal and Holland.

Now he is a highly regarded laureate of many European violin competitions, including first, audience and critic’s prizes in the coveted Music Antiqua Competition in Bruges. The charismatic virtuoso is in great demand as a soloist and director. He recently toured Europe and the US as concertmaster and co-soloist with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in her acclaimed Drama Queens concerts. Reviewers described his performances as “spellbinding” and “outrageous”.

Sinkovsky will perform on an exquisite Francesco Ruggeri violin made in Cremona in 1675, made available to him by the Netherlands-based Jumpstart Jr Foundation, which provides the world’s leading young and gifted musicians with precious gut-string period instruments crafted by the old masters.
